Description
- Plans, develops, schedules, and conducts activities and programs for an assigned service division. Librarians will be assigned to supervise Cataloging, Children, Young Adults and/or Adult services based on operational needs and staffing expertise. Librarians may be required to rotate assignments and/or divisions at any time.
- Maintains collections of materials and resources in diverse formats from various vendors, occasionally in collaboration with consortial partners. This involves reorganizing collections and weeding when necessary. May perform original and copy cataloging and classification of all library materials and oversee the continued maintenance of electronic resource records.
- Performs a variety of customer service duties including assisting patrons with Reference, Public Access Computers, Public Internet, Automated databases, software, and other equipment. Resolves user complaints and problems.
- Participates in the development of the annual budget, prepares library purchase orders, and monitors ongoing expenditures in assigned areas. Prepares and reviews statistical and analytical reports of library activities and operations; gathers and complies data for reports.
- Develops, interprets, and enforces library policies, procedures, and regulations; monitors and reviews trends in library practices and functions; recommends operational and policy improvements. Assists management in short and long-range planning of department goals.
- Publicizes and promotes library services, programs, and collections. Conducts public relations functions and attends community events. Provides tours of library facilities and makes presentations on services. May plan, organize, and implement outreach programs for the community; coordinates programs and activities with other librarians, teachers, parent groups and organizations; and prepare press releases and speak to community groups and schools as assigned. Develops and distributes marketing materials.
- Performs a variety of general library and administrative work such as shelving, shelf reading, answering telephones, running errands, and pickup of supplies needed for activities. May assist with selection, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating staff, part-time temporary personnel, and volunteers.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Requires a Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS), at least two (2) years of professional experience in a public library, and one (1) year of supervisory experience. Or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would provide the required knowledge skills and abilities.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Working Knowledge of:
- Current principles, practices, and research methods of library science
- Principles and techniques of selecting and managing a library collection
- Library classification schemes (i.e. Dewey Decimal system)
- Record keeping and records management in hardcopy and electronic formats
- Sources of information on specialized library materials as well as general book trade and review media
- Professional networks between the Library and various boards and commissions
Skilled in:
- Developing, planning, organizing, and coordinating programs within assigned areas
- Operating personal computers and a variety of software programs including library databases, internet and social media applications, and other standard office and audio/visual equipment
- Producing and presenting informative presentations to educate others
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with diverse co-workers, teachers, parents, children, young adults, special populations, various boards and commission, and the general public
- Analyzing problems and taking appropriate actions
- Providing high quality customer service to both internal and external customers
