The Librarian performs professional library work in serving the District's adult, teen and youth customers.
This position is with the Northwest Regional Library located at 16089 N. Bullard Ave., Surprise, AZ 85374. This position will provide relevant and engaging programming for all age groups, namely Children, Teen and Adult. The successful candidate will possess excellent technology skills, enthusiasm for technology, along with strong programming and outreach experience.
Minimum education and/or experience:
Master's degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited school.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- The structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar.
- The Mission of the Maricopa County Library District.
- Administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, transcription, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.
- The use of computer applications including spreadsheets, database and word processing software.
- Skilled in:
- Working on several projects to meet deadlines by working independently or in a group setting.
- Offering a variety of programming topics to children, teen, family and/or adult audiences.
- Typing with minimal errors.

Preferred education and/or experience:
Preference given to candidates with public library experience (paid, internship and/or volunteer experience will all be considered).
This position works in a library environment. Scheduling is varied, continually dependent on library needs, and often requires evening and weekend availability. Position may be located on a high school campus and involve considerable interaction with student customers. Lifting bins, pushing carts, stooping (to shelve), kneeling (to shelve), walking to assist customers with finding materials, walking to and from staff area to public area, lifting cash drawers from the safe, moving craft and program supplies from various storage areas to site of program in the library and off-site. Lifting floor to waist – 20lbs; Lifting waist to shoulder – 5lbs; Lifting shoulder to overhead – 1lb; Carrying a distance of 50ft – 10lbs; Pushing/pulling a distance of 100ft – 50lbs.
Essential Job Tasks
- Provides exceptional customer service to internal and external customers using the Library District's Great Expectations customer service model.
- Provides reference and reader's advisory services to customers in person, by phone, and through email.
- Uses ILS to retrieve bibliographic data and item status, check customer accounts and place holds.
- Instructs individual customers or small groups on the use of the PCs, the online catalog, various databases and the Internet.
- Conducts group tours, school visits, and community outreach.
- Plans, prepares and conducts public attendance programs, such as story times, computer classes, book discussion groups, etc. for adults, teens, youth, and multi-generational depending on assignment.
- Responds to customer concerns in person, on the telephone, and online through Ask-a-Librarian.
- Prepares daily cash summary, balance monies received, and balance cash drawer.
- Assists in the overall operation of the Adult Services/Youth Services areas.
- Prepares book displays, create posters, create bibliographies, bookmarks, bulletin boards, games, and promotional displays.
- Facilitates public reading programs/initiatives.
- Shelves, shelf-read and shift materials.
- Sorts and prepares materials for shelving.
- Compiles and reports statistics.
- Writes reports and memos.
- Oversees Advisory Groups and coordinate Volunteer assignments.
- Serves in lead role as appropriate.
- Participates in collection development of assigned area(s).
- Serves as a local liaison to the central selectors for library materials in assigned areas.
- Evaluates and weed collection according to Library District policies.
- Uses data analysis to evaluate the collection and determine needs.
- Prescreens donated materials.
- Upholds Library District service standards and participates fully as a MCLD Citizen.
- Serves on standing and/or ad-hoc committees.
- Demonstrates timely attendance and completion of work.
- Adheres to Library District policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates respect for customers and fellow staff, and foster a collaborative team environment.
- Participates fully in all meetings, as required. Maintain personal and professional development.
- Complies with the Maricopa County Code of Ethics.

Typically, successful candidates are hired at a salary rate up to midpoint of the range, based on applicable experience, internal equity and budgetary allowances.
